Should I Use T5 OR T8 UVB For My Bearded Dragon?

UVB lighting is one of the most important parts of a bearded dragon's setup, since it allows them to synthesize vitamin D3 and properly absorb calcium.

Without adequate UVB, dragons are prone to metabolic bone disease and other serious health issues.

When shopping for a UVB bulb, keepers usually run into two main options: T5 High Output (T5 HO) and T8 fluorescent tubes. Both are UVB bulbs, but they behave very differently, and picking the right one makes a big difference in your dragon's long-term health.

Why UVB Matters for Bearded Dragons

In the wild, bearded dragons bask directly under intense desert sun for hours a day, which allows their bodies to synthesize vitamin D3. That vitamin D3 is essential for calcium absorption, and without it, even a perfectly balanced calcium-rich diet won't do much good. A quality UVB bulb is meant to recreate that sun exposure in captivity, so the strength, coverage, and distance of the bulb all matter 

What Does T5 and T8 Mean?

T5 and T8 refer to the diameter of the fluorescent tube, measured in eighths of an inch. A T8 tube is one inch in diameter, while a T5 tube is five-eighths of an inch. The size difference affects more than just the bulb's shape, it also changes how the bulb produces and projects UVB output.

T8 Bulbs

T8 UVB bulbs have been a longtime staple in reptile keeping. They are an older design than the newer T5 lighting. They are typically paired with a reflective fixture and produce a gentler, more diffused level of UVB output.

Pros: Widely available, generally less expensive, and a good fit for smaller or shorter enclosures where the bulb sits closer to the basking area and enclosures where the light must be inside mounted, and/or species that need lower UV output / do not require UVB. 

Cons: Lower intensity output, which means the effective distance where dragons receive beneficial UVB is fairly limited, often only 12 inches (30 cm) or less from the bulb. In taller enclosures, a T8 may not reach the basking area with meaningful UVB at all. T8 bulbs tend to have their levels of UVB diminish faster than T5, which means more frequent bulb replacements to ensure your dragon is receiving optimal UV output. T8 bulbs are not strong enough for bearded dragons when placed on top of enclosures since mesh obstructs a percentage of UV output. 

T5 HO Bulbs

T5 High Output bulbs produce a noticeably stronger, more concentrated beam of UVB and have become the standard recommendation for bearded dragons in recent years.

Pros: Much stronger output that can reach further into an enclosure, making them a better match for taller enclosures. A T5 HO paired with a proper reflective fixture can maintain effective UVB output at distances of 12–18 inches (30–45 cm) or more depending on the specific bulb's strength. They can be mounted on top of enclosures over screens and still provide adequate UV levels at the basking spot. 

Cons: Typically costs more upfront, and because the output is so much stronger, it's important to follow the manufacturer's distance guidelines closely to avoid over-exposure.

Which One Should You Choose?

For most modern bearded dragon enclosures, 4x2x2 or 6x2x2, a T5 HO 10.0 or 12% UVB bulb is a better choice. It provides stronger, more reliable UVB output across a larger basking area, closely mimicking the intensity dragons would experience in the wild. If using a taller enclosure such as a 4x2x4 or a 6x3x3, you may need to get a stronger bulb such as a 14%, and/or use a reflective fixture to concentrate the UV output down to the lower area of the enclosure.

A T8 bulb can still work in smaller or shorter enclosures where the bulb is inside mounted close to the basking spot, but keepers should measure the actual distance from bulb to basking surface to confirm it falls within the bulb's effective range and be sure to closely follow the manufacturers replacement recommendations.

Setup Tips for Either Bulb Type

Regardless of which bulb you choose, a few habits will help you get the most out of it. It is highly recommended that you always use a UV index meter (such as a Solarmeter 6.5) to measure actual output at the basking spot rather than relying on the bulb's packaging alone, since real-world results vary with fixture, distance, and enclosure screen material.

 UVB output degrades over time even when the bulb still produces visible light, so most T5 and T8 bulbs should be replaced every 6-12 months depending on the brand and usage; having a UV meter ensures you know when is the right time to replace your bulb. You will likely find that the Solarmeter will pay for itself since many bulbs will last a bit longer than their typical manufacturer recommended replacement date, but you can only know that the bulb is still producing adequate UV levels if it is tested with a UV meter.

Make sure there's no glass or plastic between the bulb and your dragon, since these materials often filter out UVB rays almost entirely. Finally, always pair UVB lighting with a proper basking heat source since heat and UVB work together to support healthy digestion and calcium metabolism.

So, Which UVB Bulb Type is Best for a Bearded Dragon?

While both T5 HO and T8 bulbs can support a healthy bearded dragon when set up correctly, T5 HO bulbs generally offer stronger, more reliable coverage for the taller enclosures that are now considered standard husbandry requirements for Bearded Dragons. T8 bulbs may be the right choice for temporary enclosures or inside mounted bulbs with closer basking spots, depending on your situation.

Whichever bulb you choose, regular UVB replacement and accurate measurement at the basking spot are what really make the difference for your dragon's long-term health!
