Leopard Gecko: At a Glance

Leopard geckos (Eublepharis macularius) are arid, ground-dwelling geckos native to Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran, India, and Pakistan. Leopard Geckos in the Wild

The leopard gecko (Eublepharis macularius) is an arid gecko species native to Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran, India, and Pakistan. First described in 1854, their name comes from the Latin "macula," meaning spot or blemish -- a reference to their signature markings. Most leopard geckos in the pet trade today are captive-bred descendants of animals originally collected in Pakistan.

Unlike many other geckos, leopard geckos have claws instead of sticky toe pads, so they can't climb glass or vertical surfaces, and they have movable eyelids that let them blink. They're crepuscular, most active at dawn and dusk, and in the wild they retreat underground during the hottest parts of the day. Leopard geckos are currently listed as "Least Concern" by the IUCN, though mining and quarrying in their native range are a slow, ongoing threat.

Preparing for Your Leopard Gecko

Before your gecko comes home, your enclosure should be fully set up with lighting and heat running for several hours so you can confirm accurate temperatures with an infrared thermometer and a digital probe thermometer/hygrometer. Getting this dialed in beforehand reduces the risk of your new gecko overheating or becoming stressed while you fine-tune the setup.

Have your supplies, supplements, and gutloaded feeder insects ready before your gecko arrives, and ask the breeder or previous owner what the animal has been eating and how often. It's also worth having a trusted exotic veterinarian's contact information on hand -- getting your gecko seen within the first few weeks helps build a relationship and gives your vet a baseline health record to work from later.

Quarantine

New leopard geckos should be kept isolated in a sterile, easy-to-clean setup (paper towel substrate, plastic/disinfectable hides) for at least 90 days to catch any illness before it can spread to other reptiles in your home. Use a veterinary disinfectant like F10 on rotation with other disinfectants, keep separate tools (tongs, bowls, misting bottles) for the quarantine animal, and always care for it last in your daily routine.

A fecal test from your exotic vet can rule out common parasites, and for cryptosporidium specifically, 3 negative PCR tests spaced several weeks apart give the most confidence that a new gecko isn't carrying the disease, since it can lay dormant for months before showing symptoms.

Choosing an Enclosure

Adult leopard geckos need a minimum 36"x18"x12" enclosure (about 40 gallons), though they'll happily use more space if you give it to them. We recommend the Zen Habitats 4'x2'x16" for ample floor space -- it offers 90 gallons with 16" of vertical climbing room, great for geckos that like to climb -- and you can size up to the 4x2x2 (120 gallons) if yours does. The ideal enclosure has 3 opaque sides to reduce stress from seeing "neighbors" (especially important for males), opens from the front so you're not reaching over your gecko's head, and has a screen top for proper ventilation and humidity control.

Young geckos are often started in smaller enclosures or ventilated plastic totes to build confidence and observe growth before upgrading to their adult habitat. Leopard geckos do fine in wood, glass, or PVC enclosures, though glass or PVC is generally a better choice if you're planning a bioactive setup with higher humidity.

Lighting

Leopard geckos don't require UVB or full-spectrum lighting to survive as long as they're getting adequate dietary D3, but offering low-level UVB at the proper strength and distance can still be beneficial. If you use UVB, choose a low-level linear bulb made for shade-dwelling species (ZooMed 5.0 T5, Arcadia 6% T5, or Arcadia ShadeDweller) -- linear bulbs are far more reliable than compact/coil options. Aim for a UVI of 0.4-0.8, never exceeding 1.0 where your gecko can access the light, and keep albino animals below 0.7 to avoid burns.

Leopard geckos should get 14 hours of light in summer and 12 hours in winter. Night lights aren't needed and can disrupt their natural photoperiod -- they're crepuscular, most active at dawn, dusk, and in darkness. UVB output declines over time even if the bulb still visibly lights up, so replace UVB bulbs every 6-12 months unless you're monitoring output with a UV meter.

Temperatures

The most natural way to heat a leopard gecko is from above, just like the sun -- a halogen bulb or deep heat projector (DHP), hooked to a dimmer or proportional thermostat, closely mimics this. Under-tank heat mats are also commonly used, especially in small grow-out enclosures where overhead lighting could overheat the space.

"Belly heat" is not required for digestion -- that's a long-standing myth. In the wild, leopard geckos get all their heat from the sun above and retreat underground to cool down, not to warm up. Heat rocks should always be avoided since they can't be regulated and have caused burns. A nighttime temperature drop into the low 60s is safe and even beneficial; leopard geckos don't need supplemental heat at night unless your home dips below 60°F.

Humidity

Leopard geckos are an arid species, and ideal ambient daytime humidity (30-40%) usually matches the humidity already in our homes. Always offer a humid hide at 70-80% humidity, filled with moisture-retentive substrate like peat or sphagnum moss, so your gecko can retreat there when shedding rather than raising humidity across the whole enclosure (which increases respiratory illness risk).

Low humidity is rarely an issue if a humid hide is available, but without one it can cause dehydration and poor shedding. If humidity runs too high, add ventilation, a small computer fan in the enclosure, or a fan in the room to improve air circulation.

Substrate

There's no single best substrate for a leopard gecko -- it depends on what works for you and your animal. Solid options like paper towel or a Zen Mat are easy to sterilize and great for quarantine, but require more frequent cleaning and don't support digging. Loose substrates (arid mixes, play sand, excavator clay) allow natural digging behavior and are bioactive-compatible, and a properly kept gecko on a suitable loose substrate is not more prone to impaction than one on solid substrate.

Avoid reptile carpet, calcium/vitamin sand, ground walnut shells, coarse wood products, gravel, coco coir as a sole substrate, and shredded-paper small-animal bedding -- these carry impaction, respiratory, or bacterial risks. If you want to mix your own, a 40% organic topsoil / 40% sand / 20% excavator clay blend, moistened and allowed to dry before use, works well.

Bioactive Enclosures

A bioactive enclosure is a self-sustaining ecosystem built around moisture, live plants, and a cleanup crew (CUC) of microfauna like isopods and springtails. For leopard geckos, an arid bioactive setup most closely mirrors their natural habitat. Since the enclosure stays arid, a drainage layer is optional, and you'll want at least 4-6" of substrate to support digging and any live plant roots.

Dwarf white isopods are a cheap, popular CUC choice small enough to avoid becoming an easy snack, while darkling beetles (the beetle stage of mealworms/superworms) tolerate low humidity well and are less appetizing to hungry geckos. Add a biodegradable top layer (dry leaves, rotting wood) as a food source for the cleanup crew, and keep some moisture in the deeper substrate layers so your CUC has somewhere humid to retreat.

Decorating an Enclosure

Decor isn't just for looks -- it's environmental enrichment that encourages exploration and natural behavior. Hollow logs, branches (cholla, driftwood, spiderwood, manzanita, cork), flagstone/slate, and drought-resistant plants or succulents all work well. Leopard geckos are primarily ground-dwelling but do use low vertical space, so branches, rocks, and background ledges give them room to climb and explore.

You don't need a strictly naturalistic desert theme -- some keepers mix fake foliage, real succulents, or a combination -- as long as everything you use is reptile-safe. Moving decor around occasionally gives your gecko a "new" environment to investigate and is a simple way to keep them mentally engaged.

Feeding

Leopard geckos are insectivores. The general feeding rule is 2 appropriately sized bugs per 1 inch of your gecko's length, or however much they'll eat in 15 minutes -- and insects should be smaller than the space between your gecko's eyes to avoid digestive issues. Offer a varied diet of crickets, dubia roaches, discoid roaches, red runner roaches, black soldier fly larvae, mealworms, superworms, darkling beetles, hornworms, silkworms, grasshoppers, isopods, and waxworms as an occasional treat.

How often to feed depends on age: juveniles daily, young adults every 2-3 days, and adults (whose tail is thicker than their neck) every 4-7 days. Never feed wild-caught insects -- pesticide and parasite risk -- and avoid dead, freeze-dried, or processed insects as a regular diet, since they lose nutritional value. Dust feeders lightly with calcium containing D3 if your gecko isn't getting UVB, or calcium without D3 most feedings if it is getting adequate UVB exposure.

Weighing & Body Condition

Weighing your leopard gecko regularly is one of the easiest ways to catch health problems early, since reptiles are good at hiding illness and weight loss is often the first sign something's wrong. Use a kitchen gram scale tared to 0.00, and don't worry about small day-to-day fluctuations -- how recently your gecko ate or defecated affects the number.

Reptiles are scored on a body condition scale from 1 (emaciated) to 9 (grossly obese), with 5 considered excellent condition. Pet reptiles are prone to obesity from sedentary lifestyles and easy access to food, which raises the risk of prolapse, egg binding, and organ dysfunction -- while being too thin often points to husbandry issues, illness, or stress that's worth investigating with your vet.

Making mealtimes more active (scatter feeding, tong-chasing) and choosing leaner feeders over fatty ones like waxworms can help an overweight gecko. An underweight gecko needs a slow, careful reintroduction to food under veterinary guidance, since feeding too much too fast to an emaciated animal can be dangerous.

Hydration

A leopard gecko with access to a clean, shallow water dish will typically stay hydrated on its own. Use filtered, tap, or spring water -- never distilled, which lacks the minerals your gecko needs, and be cautious with exclusively softened or RO water for the same reason.

Soaking does not hydrate a leopard gecko -- that's a persistent myth. Reptiles can't absorb meaningful water through their skin or cloaca, and must drink orally. If you notice signs of dehydration, mist the enclosure so your gecko can lick droplets and ensure a water dish is available; severe cases may need subcutaneous fluids from an exotic vet.

Shedding

Shedding (ecdysis) happens because a leopard gecko's skin doesn't stretch as they grow -- young, fast-growing geckos shed every 1-2 weeks, slowing to monthly or every other month as adults. The whole process can take as little as 10-20 minutes, so you may not even notice it happening, especially since it often happens overnight.

Before shedding, your gecko may look dull or develop a whitish cast, and be a little less interested in food. Leopard geckos eat their own shed, so don't be alarmed by a spell of reduced appetite right after. If shed gets stuck (most common on toes in young geckos), a humidity chamber -- a container with damp paper towel or moss for 15-30 minutes -- can help loosen it; never peel off shed that isn't ready to come off.

Enrichment

Handling

Approach your leopard gecko from the front and lift from underneath, supporting all four legs -- coming from overhead can trigger a predator response. "Treadmill" or "hand-over-hand" handling (offering your free hand as a new place to walk to) helps with squirmy or young geckos.

Keep sessions to 10-15 minutes to avoid excessive stress, and hold off handling entirely for the first 1-2 weeks after bringing your gecko home while it adjusts. Make sure your gecko is reliably eating before you start handling sessions, and always wash your hands with soap and water afterward.

Cohabitation

Leopard geckos are solitary and territorial. Males will fight, females can become stressed or fight with tank mates, and male/female pairs can breed unintentionally -- which risks the female's health from overbreeding, stress, or calcium crashing. Young geckos housed with older ones risk being bitten or even cannibalized. For their own safety and wellbeing, leopard geckos should always be housed alone.

It's also worth remembering that leopard geckos don't benefit from interacting with other species. Cats and dogs can carry bacteria that's fatal to reptiles, and even a curious pet sitting on a screen top can cause it to collapse -- so keep predator/prey pets separated and choose an enclosure sturdy enough to keep curious housemates out.

Behaviors and Their Meanings

Leopard geckos communicate through a range of behaviors. "Firing up" -- intensifying their colors -- happens in the dark, after misting, during breeding, under bright light, or while hunting, and isn't a sign of stress on its own. They lick their eyes to keep them clean since they don't produce tears, and flick their tongue to draw scent particles to their Jacobson's organ while exploring.

Squeaking and standing tall are startle responses, most common in young geckos. Tail wagging can mean they're focused on prey, or agitated if there's no food involved -- consider it a warning sign. Mouth gaping is a warning that they may bite if they feel trapped, and dropping their tail (caudal autonomy) is a natural defense mechanism that lets them escape a threat; the tail will regrow, though it often looks different afterward.

Common Diseases/Ailments

Leopard geckos are hardy, generally healthy reptiles, and it's entirely possible you'll never deal with any of the issues below. Still, it's worth knowing the warning signs so you can get prompt veterinary care if something comes up.

Metabolic Bone Disease (MBD) results from inadequate calcium/D3 and shows up as bowed legs, rubber jaw, or tremors. Internal parasites (pinworms most common) cause diarrhea and weight loss. Cryptosporidiosis ("sticktail") causes rapid weight loss and is not curable once contracted. Impaction shows up as a lack of stool and stiff or immobile hind limbs. Hypovitaminosis A causes retained eye caps and poor shed. Prolapsed hemipenis and egg binding (dystocia) are both reproductive emergencies that need prompt veterinary attention.
