How to Position UVB Lighting in a Bearded Dragon Enclosure

UVB lighting is one of the most important aspects in your bearded dragon's enclosure. Without adequate UVB exposure, a dragon cannot properly synthesize vitamin D3, which is essential for calcium absorption. Getting the placement of the UVB fixture is just as important as choosing a quality bulb with the correct output. 

Position the Fixture Over the Basking Area

The UVB tube or fixture should run along the same side of the enclosure as the basking spot and heat lamp. This way, when your dragon seeks out the warmth of their basking spot, they are receiving strong UVB exposure at the same time, which mimics how they would bask in the wild and get UV and warmth from the sun. 

Cover Half to Two-Thirds of the Enclosure

As a general rule, the UVB fixture should span roughly half to two-thirds of the enclosure's length, centered over the basking side rather than stretched across the entire tank. This gives your dragon strong, consistent UVB output across the whole basking zone while leaving the far end of the enclosure with little to no UVB reach so they can completely move away from UVB if they wish.

Mind the Distance and Any Barriers

Mount the fixture inside the enclosure or directly on top of mesh, since glass and plastic can filter out most of the UVB rays before they reach your dragon. Check the manufacturer's guidance for the ideal distance between the bulb and the basking surface, as this varies by bulb strength and typically falls somewhere between six and twelve inches.

If mounting the UV fixture on top of the enclosure, check with the enclosure manufacturer to determine what percentage of UV rays are filtered out by the mesh. 

Replace Bulbs on Schedule

UVB output weakens over time even if the bulb still produces visible light, so most linear UVB tubes should be replaced every six to twelve months depending on the brand.
